Spanish

One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.

Why we teach Spanish

At Egglescliffe CE Primary School we foster a positive interest and genuine curiosity about foreign languages. We view language learning as multi-dimensional and through our curriculum children explore relationships between language and identity, developing a deeper understanding of other cultures and the world around them. We provide a relevant, broad, vibrant and ambitious Spanish curriculum that will inspire and excite our children using a wide variety of topics and themes. Children apply their learning through a variety of contexts with regular opportunities to recall and build on previous knowledge. This lays down solid foundations for future language learning, giving children the confidence and skills to flourish and become life-long language learners.

How we teach Spanish

Spanish is taught across school through Language Angels. Language Angels is a fully comprehensive scheme which ensures substantial progress and builds solid foundations in language learning. Progression in Language Angels is fluid; children begin with early language units moving gradually onto intermediate and finally progressive.

Creativity is at the heart of our language curriculum and the focus is on interactive, immersive teaching. The curriculum is founded around the three pillars, phonics, vocabulary and grammar which are fully embedded across all units. Phonics is taught progressively and recapped frequently. Each unit recaps and consolidates core vocabulary, gradually expanding children’s range of language to become more complex and sophisticated. Grammar is weaved into every unit, introduced both implicitly and explicitly. Once introduced, any grammar is constantly revisited and recycled in the units that follow. This approach ensures all children are supported through their language journey to become confident, independent learners.
