Physical Education

"Sports are a microcosm of life. They teach you how to deal with challenges, how to push through adversity, and how to work as a team."

Venus Williams

Why we teach Physical Education

Egglescliffe CE Primary School aims to provide every child with the opportunity to develop a love for physical activity, become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness, and promote an understanding of the importance of health and well-being. At Egglescliffe, we offer pupils an inclusive and equitable, high-quality physical education promoting life-long learning opportunities for all. Through a variety of fun, engaging, and challenging activities, children will learn fundamental movement skills (ultimately leading to an individualised level of motor competence), teamwork, and sportsmanship, which will empower them to enjoy physical activity both in and out of school. We aim to inspire children to be confident, active individuals, who appreciate the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle and are encouraged to take responsibility for their own physical and personal development.

How we teach Physical Education

Our approach to Physical Education (PE) is ensuring we have a comprehensive progression of skills and knowledge tailored to the needs and interests of our children that is delivered through both the Complete PE scheme, implemented by teachers, and by a variety of experienced coaches. This blended approach ensures that all areas of physical development are targeted, fostering both skill development and a love for physical activity.

The Complete PE scheme offers a structured, progressive framework that allows children to develop fundamental skills in a wide range of sports and physical activities. This ensures consistency and depth in teaching core skills such as coordination, balance, agility, and teamwork. As we focus on the teaching of the skills as opposed to sport-specific teaching, we are able to offer our children a range of sports in which they can apply their skills whilst building their knowledge and experience for competitive sports alongside this. By incorporating expert coaches from diverse sporting backgrounds, we enrich our PE program with specialised knowledge and unique experiences. These coaches bring a wealth of expertise offering targeted sessions that further enhance children's technique and understanding across multiple disciplines, from athletics and football to gymnastics and dance.

Through this approach, we ensure that all children, regardless of ability or experience, are supported in developing their physical, social, emotional and cognitive skills.
