“I found I could say things with colour and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for.”

Why we teach PSHE
Egglescliffe C.E. Primary School believes that a strong PSHE education is important to help our pupils develop into well-rounded members of society, who can make a positive contribution to their community. Our PSHE curriculum is strongly tied to our RSE, relationships, health education and pastoral care programme.
The vision for pupils, staff and others linked to our school is to always look to achieve our personal best in every aspect of school life.
How we teach PSHE
The PSHE curriculum at Egglescliffe CE Primary School provides values-based, progressive content that promotes respectful behaviour, mental health, wellbeing, resilience and achievement. Research shows that there is a link between a pupil’s wellbeing, positive mental health and academic achievement. Therefore, in order for our children to learn and be well, they need to have good mental health, resilience and the ability to keep themselves safe. Through our PSHE curriculum, we aim to equip children with these attributes and the skills to implement them in different contexts.
The SCARF scheme provides clear, easy-to-follow lesson plans that are organised into themes such as emotional literacy, relationships, and responsibility. This ensures that teachers can cover all areas of PSHE in a balanced way, without missing key topics. The structure allows for consistent and progressive learning, which is important for building a child’s understanding over time.
The SCARF scheme is designed to help children develop emotional intelligence, manage their feelings, and build resilience. It encourages children to understand and express their emotions, promoting positive mental health and well-being. This is especially important for children aged 3-5, as it supports the development of key emotional skills at a crucial time in their growth.
Exceptionality of PSHE
At Egglescliffe CE Primary School, personal development is a key priority, woven throughout all aspects of school life. We follow the SCARF programme to support pupils’ emotional, social, and mental wellbeing, helping them to build resilience, empathy and confidence from an early age. Our inclusive and reflective approach encourages a growth mindset, celebrates diversity, and nurtures a love of learning. Children are given a wide range of leadership opportunities and take part in enriching experiences such as theme weeks, clubs, and partnerships with external organisations. Strong links with families and tailored support ensure that every child is valued, supported, and able to thrive.
