Fundamental British Values

According to the DfE, “Schools should promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. This can help schools to demonstrate how they are meeting the requirements of section 78 of the Education Act 2002.

  • Democracy
  • The Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, and for those without faith.

Fundamental British Values are promoted throughout all areas of our school and curriculum. We have a range of opportunities for children to implement and exercise their fundamental British Values.

Democracy

All children have the right to vote. Each year, we hold elections for our School Councillors and Team Leaders. In the classroom, children have the opportunity to vote for class texts and certain topics that they would like to learn about. We value working collaboratively to make decisions together and

The Rule of Law

At school, we teach children about school rules and why they are important for everyone's safety and fairness. Inviting our local community such as police officers, the fire brigade and local religious figures to talk about their role and the importance of following laws in society to create harmony and be a global neighbour.

Individual Liberty

We are passionate about pupils making their own choices and valuing their opinion about the activities they take part in, like choosing clubs or developing investigations/enquiries for projects. Teaching children about their rights and responsibilities using the Global Goals and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child to empower and support them to make safe and informed choices.

Mutual Respect

Using our School Values, we promote good manners and respectful behaviour across the school. Our pupil leadership roles across school empower our children to be role models and advocate our School Values: Love, Trust, Hope and Friendship. Working in team activities with our House Teams (Aidan, Bede, Cuthbert and Hilda), our students listen to others, helping develop Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Tolerance

Learning about different religions, cultures and communities through all areas of our curriculum and Personal Development offer, broadens our children’s understanding of not just their local community to also our global community. Celebrating festivals from various faiths such as Diwali, Eid, Hanukkah and the Lunar New Year promote understanding and appreciation of others.
